Phalaris

Phalaris Aquatica L.

  •  A lowland hardy, blue-green perennial grass found mainly on fertile soils.

  • Tolerant of heavy soils that are wet in winter and survive severe summer droughts.

  • Drought resistant - excellent drought regrowth

  • Grows best on drier soils in autumn and winter. 

  • Withstands hard grazing and treading once established

  • Has excellent pest resistance  

  • Grass grub resistance - is known to reduce grass grub numbers in the soil.

  • Helping to protect companion grasses and legumes. 

cons

  • Pure stands can be toxic always plant as part of a mix
    contains an alkaloid causing a nervous disorder, phalaris staggers, in grazing stock. 

  • When sown as a minor component in a mix with other dryland grasses, this is not normally a problem
     
    Mixtures 

  • Ryegrass (spring growth) and cocksfoot (summer-winter growth), or with tall fescue, clovers/legumes and or herbs. 
    Suggested sow rate: 1-2 kg/ha in mixtures
